You Do Not Have to Arrive Great

Future Comets do not need to show up perfect. They need to show up willing to learn, work, compete and become a teammate.
Maybe you are thinking about playing high school basketball. And maybe there is a voice in your head asking: Am I good enough?
Here is something we want future Cody players to understand: You do not have to know the answer yet. You are young. You are supposed to still be developing.
The question we are more interested in is: ARE YOU WILLING?
Coach Orlando Watkins
- Are you willing to learn?
- Are you willing to work?
- Are you willing to compete?
- Are you willing to defend somebody?
- Are you willing to make mistakes?
- Are you willing to come back the next day after making them?
- Are you willing to be coached?
- Are you willing to become a teammate?
Because those things give us something to build.
Basketball Players Are Not Born Finished
Every player you admire was once learning. Every great shooter has missed thousands of shots. Every confident ball handler has lost the basketball. Every great defender has gotten beat. Every leader has had moments when she was not sure what to say.
Development is not avoiding those moments. Development is what you do next.
Do Not Wait for Confidence
One of the biggest mistakes young athletes make is believing, “I will do it when I am confident.” Sometimes confidence comes afterward.
- Take the shot while you are nervous.
- Guard the good player.
- Raise your hand.
- Speak in the huddle.
- Try the move you have been practicing.
We call that courage before confidence. Sometimes you have got to GO SCARED. Then do it again.
Eventually you have created evidence that you can handle difficult things. That is where real confidence starts.
Your Role Can Grow
Maybe you are not a scorer yet. Okay. Can you defend? Can you rebound? Can you sprint? Can you communicate? Can you make the extra pass? Can your teammates trust you?
There are a lot of ways to become valuable before you become great. And when coaches find something they can trust, they can build from there.
Come See What You Can Become
We are not asking prospective players to show up perfect. We are asking them to show up willing. We will teach. We will challenge. We will compete. We will make mistakes together. And we will keep building.
Do not ask only, “Am I good enough for Cody?” Ask a better question: “HOW GOOD COULD I BECOME AT CODY?”
Coach Orlando Watkins
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ARRIVE GREAT. YOU HAVE TO BE READY TO BECOME GREAT.
